Nong Khiaw

Set on the banks of the Nam Ou River in northern Laos, Nong Khiaw feels a world away from the busier tourist hubs. Limestone karsts rise sharply from the water, mist often hangs over the valley in the mornings, and life moves at an unhurried pace. The small town is centred around its iconic bridge, with guesthouses, cafés, and restaurants spread along both sides of the river.

Hiking is the main reason most travellers come to Nong Khiaw. The area offers a wide range of viewpoints, from relatively short and straightforward climbs suitable for most people, to far more demanding routes that require good fitness, navigation skills, and a head for heights. One of the tougher hikes is often jokingly referred to as the “Mount Everest of Nong Khiaw” by locals and guides, reflecting both its difficulty and the sense of achievement at the top.

For more adventurous hikers, it’s also possible to camp overnight on some of the surrounding mountain peaks. These multi-hour climbs reward you with complete isolation, star-filled skies, and unforgettable sunrise views over the Nam Ou valley the following morning, a highlight for anyone looking to experience the area beyond the usual day hikes.

Accommodation here is simple but scenic, often with balconies overlooking the river. Evenings are quiet, with most people opting for a relaxed dinner, a Beerlao by the water, and an early night. Nong Khiaw suits travellers looking for nature, calm, and authenticity rather than nightlife or shopping, making it an ideal stop between Luang Prabang and Laos’ more rural north.
